Westlake, Ohio Natives Are Encouraged to Sign up for Bookbinding Classes at Small Studio’s New Location

By Gemma Chriss

Everyone should have the opportunity to explore a new hobby. Unfortunately, there aren’t many places around the Berea, Ohio or Brook Park, Ohio area for adults to express their creativity in a fun, laidback environment. However, there is good news for those interested in paper crafts. Small Studio recently introduced their new Bookbinding Club—a monthly bookbinding class that focuses on a different technique or project every month. This local craft shop near Westlake, Ohio gives participants the step-by-step instructions they need to create handmade journals and other unique items using specialty art supplies conveniently located within Small Studio’s own inventory.

Though many visitors to Small Studio have shown an interest in paper crafts, the owner of this local craft shop came up with the idea for the new Bookbinding Club after hosting a Coptic bookbinding class in October of last year. Those who attended the event had a great time learning about this sewn book technique and expressed a desire to practice their newly developed skills. A few weeks later, Small Studio hosted another event with an even better turnout than the one before. After overhearing one of the participants say, “I wish we could have a bookbinding class every month,” the owner of Small Studio decided to make it a regular event.

The Bookbinding Club at Small Studio is designed to teach the basics of this interesting paper craft, and demonstrate how to use the various tools and papers associated with it. Participants learn how to put pages together with PVA (a bookbinding glue) and glue brushes, create holes with needle awls, and crease paper with bone folders. Thankfully, all the specialty art supplies one needs to complete a handmade journal or other project can be found within this craft shop. After participants have mastered the basics, they’re able to move on to more complicated book structures, such as art journals with decorated pages.

Residents throughout the Berea, Brook Park, and Westlake areas are welcome to join the Bookbinding Club at Small Studio. The group meets at least one Saturday a month, with a scheduled bookbinding class and a repeat for those who missed it. Individuals can join at any time and choose which classes they wish to attend. There is no club “fee” to take part in the events hosted at this local craft shop; instead, participants pay just $25 for basic materials and instruction.

The next few bookbinding classes at Small Studio are scheduled for April 1st, April 29th, and May 27th. However, the paper craft projects that participants will be working on during these classes have yet to be announced. Residents throughout Berea, Ohio; Brook Park, Ohio; Westlake, Ohio; and beyond can find additional information about the events hosted at this local craft shop by “liking” Small Studio’s Facebook page. Those who are interested in creating handmade journals and other items using specialty art supplies should sign up for the next class as soon as the details are announced online.
