The market was completely rebuilt in 2002, and is now a 100,000 square foot, two-storey one-stop shopping facility. Step inside, and you will find over 110 individually owned shops with an incredible variety of themes and products. It is a haven for collectors of all types, from glassware to sports memorabilia. It is also the perfect place to stop for fresh, locally grown produce, as well as meats and cheeses.
In addition to the variety of shops—some for pets, some just for kids, and some for the kid in all of us—you will also find Sarah’s Grille. Centrally located inside Hartville MarketPlace on the first floor, variety is also the order of the day here. Visitors can order traditional breakfast dishes, like the fresh cinnamon rolls which are handmade daily. Later in the day, snack foods, such as hand rolled pretzels are available, along with hot dogs, pizza, burgers, and more. Once again, the variety of fare offered in Hartville MarketPlace’s Sarah’s Grille should easily please everyone in your party.
The variety doesn’t stop with the shops and foods that you can find in Hartville MarketPlace; it also extends to its history. Since its humble beginnings in 1939, Hartville MarketPlace and Flea Market has existed in a variety of incarnations. The one consistency is that there has always been a Hartville MarketPlace. From a 40 foot by 80 foot barn to the 100,000 square foot facility that exists today, the marketplace has been a staple of the Hartville, Ohio area for over 70 years.
Hartville MarketPlace was started by Sol Miller for the sale and auction of livestock. The first addition came when Sol’s wife opened a lunch stand on the second floor. Additional variety came to the market when Sol began renting space to other vendors to sell their wares. This was the inception of the Hartville Flea Market.
This small empire grew over time, adding variety, and came to include not only Hartville Auction and Flea Market, but also Hartville Kitchen restaurant, and the distribution of the restaurant’s salad dressings to local grocers.
Hartville MarketPlace is still a family-owned local business today. Howard Miller, Sol Miller’s son, took over daily operations after his father passed in 1958. He continued to grow the business until his passing in 2001. In his honor, the parent company over all of the businesses was changed from Hartville Auction to HRM Enterprises. In 1980, Howard’s son-in-law, Marion Coblentz, assumed his father-in-law’s duties. He continues to run Hartville MarketPlace today.
