E.F. Boyd & Son Is Greater Cleveland’s Premier African-American Funeral Home

E.F. Boyd & Son Funeral Home and Crematory has been serving the Greater Cleveland community for over one hundred years. From humble beginnings and a one man operation, E.F. Boyd & Son has grown to become the premiere African-American funeral home in Cleveland and the surrounding areas.

E.F. Boyd & Son was founded by Elmer Franklin Boyd in 1905. At that time, there were only a limited number of professions for an African-American man to choose from. Mr. Boyd decided to attend Clark’s College of Embalming, which has since become the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.

After graduation, Mr. Boyd opened the E.F. Boyd Funeral Parlor on Cleveland’s Central Avenue. In 1906, Elmer F. Boyd became partners with Lewis J. Dean. Mr. Dean left after five years, and the funeral home moved to a second location on Central Avenue. It was managed by Elmer F. Boyd and his wife, Cora. Elmer and Cora were deeply rooted in their Christian faith and attended St. John A.M.E. Church.

William F. Boyd joined his father in the funeral home business in 1933. The operation saw significant growth over the next several years, once again prompting a change of location. In 1938, the newly named E.F. Boyd & Son Funeral Home moved to its present headquarters on East 89th Street in Cleveland.

When Elmer F. Boyd passed away in 1944, his wife, son, and daughter-in-law continued to run the business. The first expansion for the business was in 1972, when E.F. Boyd & Son acquired their East Cleveland location. The opening of a second location allowed the funeral home to serve another segment of the African-American community that had migrated to Cleveland’s eastern suburbs. The African-American community continued to move southeast, which precipitated the opening of E.F. Boyd & Son’s third location, in Warrensville Heights, in 1996.

E.F. Boyd & Son began as, and continues to be, a family owned and operated business that provides the best possible service to Cleveland and the surrounding areas. The mission of the Boyd family is “to provide families who are experiencing the loss of a loved one sympathetic, compassionate, and professional service in the same manner we would want for ourselves.”

Today, E.F. Boyd & Son is a full service funeral home, employing over 50 full and part-time staff members. E.F. Boyd & Son offers services ranging from funeral pre-planning to grief support. They assist their families in both preparing for their end of life needs, as well as dealing with the significant emotional loss that families experience long after the death has occurred.
